Deadline To End Replica Furniture- Sam Jacob Opinion
Last week the Government finally set a date for the introduction of new copyright protection law which will make it illegal to manufacture or sell copies of mass-produced designs after 2020. This move comes after pressure from designers and design groups, namely Vitra, Artek and Flos, asking for more protection for furniture and lighting designers against copy cat traders who are gaining trade off their designs. The Intellectual Property Office has published the new guidelines although they will not become law till 2020. Upon introduction replica furniture companies will no longer be able to sell replicas of current and past designers from 70 years after their deaths.

The reason many major designers have supported this move is because other companies can create their designs, sell them on to the public and reap a tidy profit all the while basically ripping off someone else's design idea. The reason this is allowed under current law is because the application of 'replica' to a product title allows them to sell a copied version and thus means that the true designer isn't given credit or payment. We are supportive of this act because product designers should have the same intellectual copyrights as those in arts who produce music or books but the crooks of the matter is that it favours high-end, high-priced designers that makes fashionable pieces of the day out of reach for the general populous.
Deadline To End Replica Furniture- Chris Diemer Opinion
As Chris Diemer, of replica furniture company, pointed out in response to the new legislation, companies such as his'are making good design affordable for the masses.' Why should it be that beautiful furniture and unique designs be just for the wealthy, when adorning your house and making it feel just right for you can be key to happiness at home. Designers should be able to protect their designs but if they produced products that were affordable for everyone then maybe consumers would choose to shop with the originals and not with a replica company.

Sam Jacob also argues a good point, that by extending the copyright to 70 years after a designers death means that people will not be able to purchase modern designs because there is no incentive for the industry to create new innovations and that 'extending copyright for design condemns us to mid-century modernism"(not that we don't love the mid-century modern look). Though we do not sell replica furniture here at Barker's, we know that our customers want quality and affordability when it comes to furniture purchases, and it is reputable replica retailers that can provide this for on trend designs produced by the industry.
