The Obscure History of the Chesterfield

The obscure History of the Chesterfield Sofa
Often believed to be invented by the Earl of Chesterfield, the Chesterfield Sofa's history is much more obscure. So why is it called the Chesterfield Sofa? We may never know the truth but we can explore the various tales. The most common idea is that this piece of furniture was commissioned by the fourth earl of Chesterfield, Philip Stanhope, sometime in the 1750s. His role as a statesmen not only influenced the political landscape but he was also considered a real trend setter of his time. This may have given rise to the belief he invented the sofa and the most common tale is that it allowed comfort to rest but it's straight back meant ladies and gentlemen would still be able to sit upright and not crease their suits and dresses.

The second ideas, though still associated with the Earl, is actually the opposite in comfort. The sofa was said to be quite uncomfortable so it would discourage people from waiting too long for an audience with the Earl, who was a very busy man, and thus they would leave before he had time to see them. An interesting story but with how comfortable Chesterfields are today we simply cant imagine it.

Some suggest the term Chesterfield had been in use for a long time to describe any cushioned seating or simply to mean furniture as a whole. In Canada, the older generation still use the world Chesterfield to describe any couch or sofa. Mention of Chesterfields as the buttoned back couch we know today seems to be more common in the late Victorian Era. They tended to be velvet rather then leather but as with all fashions the velvet Chesterfield is back on trend again as designers create more unusual takes on this classic.

No matter the origin of the Chesterfield, it will no doubt remain a classic for the rest of time. The definition of this traditional design is a large couch with rolled arms the same height as the back, and typically with deep button tufting and nail-head trim. Though the shape may stay the same, the colour and fabric have chance to evolve. We currently have a purple velvet Chesterfield style sofa on show at our Lowther Rd Showroom. It's a real showstopper.
